An introduction to Graphic Design
What is art? What is design? Is there a difference? What is graphic design? Where do we see it? How do we use it? How can I use this professional career path to lead people to Jesus and bring glory to God the Father?
Section 1.1: The Design Process
The use of the principle and elements of art to create desired emotion within a targeted audience. Other things to consider; symmetrical vs. asymmetrical, negative space, cultural norms, platform of representation, etc.
Exercise: Make a list of 3 reasons why you need a design process and how it will make you a better designer.
Section 1.2: Aesthetics
Ugly: In terms of art, is the antonym of beauty. Those things that are displeasing.
Exercise: Make a list of 5 things you think are "beautiful" and 5 things you think are "ugly".
The reason you think those things are "beautiful" is because you have a direct emotional response to them. God created beautiful things because he has the desire to relate to them, or have a relationship with them, to LOVE them. He created all things because he thinks they are Good. When we feel a sense of appreciation, wanted, beautiful, accepted, etc., we are experiencing the raw form of aesthetics. In those exact moments, our emotions and our understanding of what Good and Beauty are collide and we feel complete.
- Relating to the philosophy; concerned with notions such as beautiful verse ugly.
- Relating to the science; concerned with the study of the mind and emotions in relation to the sense of beauty.

Section 1.3: Two types of computer graphics
Raster graphics: Each pixel is separately defined (as in a digital photograph) Photoshop uses rasterized graphics. This type of graphic losses quality at it is sized and resampled.
Vector graphics: Mathematical formulas and geometric points, lines, curves and shapes are used to draw and represent images in computer graphics. Illustrator uses vector graphics. This type of graphic keeps it resolution quality when sized and resampled.
Exercise: Make a list of 3 reasons why you would choose a rasterized graphic over a vector graphic or vice versa.
