Unit 6: Packaging
Project: Creating a corporate image for your company
Many people believe a brand only consists of a few elements – some colors, some fonts, a logo, a slogan and maybe some music added in too. In reality, it is much more complicated than that. You might say that a brand is a ‘corporate image’.
The fundamental idea and core concept behind having a ‘corporate image’ is that everything a company does, everything it owns and everything it produces should reflect the values and aims of the business as a whole. It is the consistency of this core idea that makes up the company, driving it, showing what it stands for, what it believes in and why they exist.
Packaging Projects:
Task 1: Business card. In illustrator or InDesign, you can open a Business Card Template . Your business card can be horizontal, vertical, one or two sided.
Standard business card size – 3.5 × 2 inches (8.9 cm x 5.1 cm). This is the size to which the finished card is trimmed.
Safe area - 3.25 x 1.75 inches. This is the area in which all your important information should appear. Generally, there should not be any writing beyond this area. Otherwise you risk having your name or phone number trimmed off.
Bleed – this is the outermost part of the card shown in white in the diagram above. The bleed is the extra bit of color information beyond the finished size of the card. It is necessary due to cutting variations and helps to give a smooth and straight appearance to the card when cut.
In summary The size of the card you design should be 2.125 by 3.625 inches. This will be trimmed to 3.5 × 2 inches (8.9 cm x 5.1 cm) which is the standard business card measurement. Ensure that your text is within the safe area (3.25 x 1.75 inches)
Task 2: letterhead A letterhead acts as a marketing opportunity, provides the opportunity for brand engagement and, apart from anything else, lend credibility to the words on the page
Letterhead design, like almost every other field, is about communicating important information effectively. The most critical piece of info you need to communicate is who’s writing the letter - the company or individual responsible.
Add: LOGO, return address, telephone number, email address, or fax number
Task 3: Packaging: Design the box, cup, mug, ziplock, bottle, etc. your product comes in. You may find “box vectors” or other blank templates to use online.
Task 4: A flyer: For an opening, sale, discount, coupon for your company, marketing cards, brochures. Think about how people know about you? This is part of your marketing piece.
Task 5: Anything else we need to know about YOU!
