Elements and Principles of Design Thumbnails
Step 1:
Using Illustrator create a thumbnail sketch for each of the following; Line, Shape/Form, Texture, Space/Perspective, Pattern, Rhythm/Movement, Scale, Balance, Unity, Color, Value. Label your drawings. Turn in all 11 thumbnail sketches on one art board. Turn it in as a png file.
Step 2:
Create a grid like the one below in Illustrator. Use the ruler tool to help keep your grid congruent. In each section, illustrate an example of the element and principle of design as they intersect. You can use your first 11 creations from the first exercise or create new ideas, please do not just copy the examples below.
Example: A design that shows value and direction could be illustrated by an object with a hard light on one side. The shadow would show value and the the gradient from light to dark would create a direction to let you know where the light in coming from.

Composition:
In the visual arts, composition is often used interchangeably with various terms such as design, form, visual ordering, or formal structure, depending on the context. In graphic design for press and desktop publishing composition is commonly referred to as page layout. (Simply put: The placement or arrangement of artistic elements in a design.)
TheProject 1: Sketchbook Cover / Poster
Create a simple well organized composition. You will use one of your grid designs, and elaborate on it, to create a sketchbook cover / poster in Illustrator. The goal of this assignment is to get familiar with using Adobe Illustrator, to continue to think about the elements and principles of design and how to organize your image to create good composition.
Step 1: Open Illustrator and make a file that is 9x11, or 11x9- you pick horizontal or vertical layout.
RULE: No external/pre-existing images or logos.
Step 2: Look at all your ideas from the past week and pick 2 of your favorite designs. What you are looking to do is make a larger version of your design as well as add the names of the element and principle used to create your piece. Everything must be created BY YOU. Take your time and put some thought into the font you choose to use. It should match the feeling of your design.
The first group of examples are without text. The second group adds one of the elements or principles of art. Your final project should include the text of both the element and principle you used to create it.
